Layers of fun wrap contest

DUMPLINGS rolled around in skilled and semi-skilled hands as stars, celebrities and elderly people tried to beat the clock at the Charitable Rice Dumpling Wrapping Competition, held recently at the Lok Fu Shopping Centre (Phase I).

Altogether 2,895 rice dumplings, wrapped in advance by 182 elderly people at 10 homes for the elderly, were collected for the event. Some were distributed at the St Christopher's Home, the Evangel Children's Home and the Precious Blood Children's Village.

The rest were put on sale at $10 each at the contest venue to raise funds for the Precious Blood Children's Village.

Pop stars, including Andy Hui Chi-on, Sammi Cheng Sau-man, Julian Cheung Chi-lam, Maple Hui Chow-yee and Anderson Junior, joined other celebrities and 20 elderly people aged between 58 and 87 to form 10 teams.

They competed for the ''Speed Award'', ''The Most Co-operative Team Award'' and ''The Eldest Participant Team Award''.

A team of two elderly people, led by Sammi Cheng, wrapped 13 rice dumplings in five minutes and won the Speed Award.

The group led by Ms Theresa Po, vice-chairman of the Executive Committee of the Hongkong Council of Social Services, won the Most Co-operative Team Award. They were judged for their good team spirit and methodical wrapping style.
