The scheme to recruit mainland professionals will benefit Hong Kong. Nowadays, Hong Kong university graduates take everything for granted. Most of them have not tried their utmost to get the necessary qualifications. They only seek fun and entertainment while ignoring all other things. The professionalism of local graduates has greatly declined in comparison to that of graduates of an earlier era. Over-protectiveness is one of the reasons for such a phenomenon. The scheme to recruit mainlanders can give them a jolt and act as a wake-up call. Also, no objections have been raised to the recruitment of employees from other countries. So why do we discriminate against our own compatriots across the border? However, the scheme does raise some questions. For example, will the scheme be attractive enough to mainlanders to take up employment in Hong Kong while other countries such as Singapore and the United States compete to get them? And how can we make sure that those recruited through the scheme will be the best? The Government should be very careful and plug all the loopholes before starting the scheme. In the long run, we should try to produce our own experts instead of importing from other countries since we cannot always depend on the foreign supply of experts. Hong Kong students are quite capable of becoming experts if only they had a good education system. For instance, the Government should not slash subsidies for local universities over the next few years. The Education Department has started to reform the educational system step by step. Teachers and students are in great confusion. They do not know which way the wind is blowing. Students have become the guinea pigs. Meanwhile, the heavy workload drives teachers crazy. They are confused and cannot concentrate on their teaching. Teachers are not Superman. How can they deal with so many changes at the same time?
