Advance copies of the Chinese-language version of The Tiananmen Papers sold out in less than two hours at a street stall in Causeway Bay yesterday.
The sale of 100 copies of the book, re-titled June Fourth: The True Story, was organised by the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movement in China. The pro-democracy alliance said the success of the sale indicated that people still wanted to know the truth behind the 1989 massacre.
The book, compiled by Zhang Liang, is allegedly based on official documents on the crackdown. It will officially go on sale to the public tomorrow, but has been available since Thursday at some bookstores in Mongkok.
Alliance chairman Szeto Wah said that after 12 years people were still interested in the events of June 4.
'Books on this topic have not been so welcome by the public in the past. This shows that people have not forgotten about it and they want to know a step further about the truth,' he said.
The original $180 price of the two-volume copy was reduced to $140 at the alliance's stall. Some stores in Mongkok have offered a 20 per cent discount.
