Harmless activity

There has been a great deal of debate about the possible legalisation of gambling on soccer matches, with some teachers campaigning against it.

These teachers feel that legalised soccer betting will turn what is at present a simple and healthy enthusiasm for a sport among young people into an unhealthy habit.

I do not agree. Gambling does not necessarily have to be a bad activity. Not everyone who gambles is addicted. In fact, it can be an entertainment for some people and helps them to relax. What is important, however, is that if soccer betting is legalised, the legislation is in force which enables officials to monitor it.

If soccer gambling is legalised, interest in soccer will increase in Hong Kong, and becoming interested in a sporting activity can only be good for you.
