Fans of Luciano Pavarotti will see rather more of the Italian tenor when he performs in the SAR in June than on his last appearance in Hong Kong. Eleven years ago Pavarotti was a relatively slimmer 54-year-old. But he had piled on 11kg after a recent attempt to diet failed, his promoter said yesterday. Pavarotti will give a performance at the Convention and Exhibition Centre on June 16 before flying to Beijing for a Three Tenors concert. The show would be only his second concert in the SAR - and possibly his last - said John Duffus of Donway International, which is promoting the concert. 'As it took 11 years before he returned, I would think it would not be likely he would be able to find the time to come back again. He is one of the world artists most in demand.' After a 40-year career, Pavarotti, 65, recently said that while he had not contemplated retirement, he would not sing for as long as his 88-year-old father, Fernando, who is still in fine voice. In a pre-recorded video played at a press briefing yesterday, the singer said: 'I am so pleased to be returning to Hong Kong. I had happy memories there and my last visit more than 10 years ago was fantastic.' Though the close-up shots managed to disguise his rotund figure, 'the King of the High Cs' is believed to be larger than ever. He will join soprano Carmela Remigio to perform arias and duets from Tosca, La Boheme, Madame Butterfly, Cavalleria Rusticana and The Merry Widow. Tickets, priced between $250 and $2,400, go on sale tomorrow. His Three Tenors concert with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras at the Forbidden City in Beijing will be held on June 23, with tickets priced from US$12 (HK$93) to US$2,000.
