Former Zengcheng party secretary Zheng Jinrong and former Shunde vice-mayor Long Xikun are being investigated for corruption, Guangzhou newspapers reported yesterday.
Long also served as vice-head of Shunde's Clean Government Working Group.
In another case, the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court has begun proceedings against a former department head at the Guangdong Posts and Telecommunications Bureau for allegedly embezzling 38 million yuan (HK$35.7 million) in public funds and using it to speculate on the stockmarket.
According to the South City News, the Guangzhou People's Procuratorate and the Guangzhou Anti-Graft Bureau are investigating Zheng, who served as Zengcheng Communist Party secretary and mayor, for allegedly accepting bribes from the manager of the Guangdong Development Bank's Zengcheng branch.
Investigators say the branch manager, surnamed Lin, passed Zheng money amounting to 500,000 yuan between 1994 and 1997, usually at Lunar new year.
Zengcheng, although technically a 'municipal-level county', falls under Guangzhou's jurisdiction. Zheng, also a delegate to the Guangdong People's Congress, later took a senior position in the Guangzhou municipal government.
