TVB has joined the scramble to bring top soccer matches to Hong Kong by striking a deal to screen three European finals.

A spokeswoman for TVB confirmed last night it would show this month's Uefa Cup final between Liverpool and Alaves, the European Champions' League final and August's European Super Cup final between the winners of the two competitions.

Under the deal, TVB will hold the rights to the finals of the Uefa and Super Cup for two more years, although the rights to the Champions' League final have to be re-negotiated next season.

TVB is also seeking the rights to screen next season's English Premier League and some matches from the 2002 World Cup, the spokeswoman said.

The rights to screen the 2002 World Cup in Hong Kong have already been secured by pay station Cable TV, but a Fifa regulation states that non-pay TV can have rights to screen the first match, the two semi-finals and the final.

Cable TV is also trying to secure a deal to show the English Premier League next season. It currently has the games but lost the rights for next season in February. No one from Cable TV was available for comment last night.
