Cafe de Coral and its 47.8 per cent-owned Manchu Wok are betting on Chinese fast-food becoming a mainstream item in North America.

To tap farther into this market, Canada-based Manchu Wok is set to double its North American restaurant network to 400 locations in the next few years, Cafe de Coral chairman Michael Chan Yue-kwong said.

Mr Chan said the parent was not expected to invest much for the expansion since most of Manchu Wok's outlets were franchise operations.

The cost of setting up a new Chinese fast-food restaurant in North America was about US$250,000, he added.

Manchu Wok sells 'North American-style' Chinese fast foods at 195 food courts in Canada and the United States.

President Brian Worts said Manchu Wok altered the flavour of its Chinese cuisine to suit north American dietary tastes.
