Beijing's top representative in Hong Kong has vowed to promote cross-border exchanges and co-operation.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Beijing Liaison Office building in Western, the director of the office, Jiang Enzhu, also said he and his colleagues would work hard to implement the 'one country, two systems' policy.
The office moved from Happy Valley a month ago but the official opening was delayed to coincide with Vice-Premier Qian Qichen's visit to the Fortune Global Forum.
Mr Qian and his wife, Zhou Hanqiong, presided over the ceremony. The director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Liao Hui, the governor of the People's Bank of China, Dai Xianglong, Shanghai mayor Xu Kuangdi and the governor of Guangdong province, Lu Ruihua, also attended the ceremony.
Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, Financial Secretary Antony Leung Kam-chung and Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung Oi-sie were among senior officials on the guest list. The ceremony ended when Mr Qian unveiled a monument.
Mr Lu said he would visit the SAR in August and meet Mr Tung. 'We will discuss how to tighten co-operation between Guangdong and Hong Kong.'
