Four Form Three and Form Four students from Yuen Long Merchants Association School defeated their counterparts from more than 200 secondary schools and won the championship at the annual Hong Kong Mathematics Olympia.
The champions were Kwok Tsz-chiu, Wong Ting-yiu, Chau Man-him and Fok Chi-kwong.
The competition, jointly organised by the Education Department and the Hong Kong Institute of Education, aimed to enhance students' interest in mathematics. Only students in Form Four or below were eligible to join.
Entering its 18th year, the competition attracted more than 200 schools from Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Forty schools were selected to compete in the final.
Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School won the championship, while Wah Yan College (Kowloon) came second and Pui Ching Middle School came third.
'I never thought we would win. The opponents were very strong and the competition was intense,' said Chi-kwong, a Form Four science student.
