Democratic Party leader Martin Lee Chu-ming held a meeting with Bill Clinton yesterday to express concern over 'new roadblocks' on the road to China's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) triggered by the latest Sino-US tensions.

Mr Lee and fellow party members Sin Chung-kai and Andrew Fung Wai-kwong met the former US president at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, where he has been staying while attending the Fortune Global Forum.

Most of their 20 minutes together was spent discussing China's accession to the WTO.

After the meeting Mr Lee said: 'The recent downhill turn in US-China relations has caused us to be concerned about its impact on China's accession to the WTO, and whether the US Congress is likely to reconsider Permanent Normal Trade Relations status for China.

'China's entry into the WTO is a crucial first step towards establishing the rule of law in China. My goal for this meeting is to share my thoughts with Mr Clinton, who was instrumental in passing the China trade bill.'

Mr Fung said Mr Clinton also wished China could enter the WTO soon.
