Students from 50 local primary and secondary schools used their talents to design a new type of school in a design contest.

Their winning entries in the form of 3D models are now being shown at the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

The 'Beyond Classroom'' Design Competition was organised by the Department of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Chinese University (CUHK) in collaboration with the Education

Department, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects and the Hong Kong Arts Centre with the help of under the auspices of the Quality Education Fund.

In the senior division, SKH Li Ping Secondary School and Sacred Heart Canossian College took the top prizes.

In the primary division, St Paul's Co-education Primary School (Kennedy Road)  and  Po Leung Kuk Chong Kee Ting Primary School were the joint champions.

The competition was a major part of an ongoing research project -' Developing Innovative School Design Parameters in Hong Kong for the 21st Century''.

It was started by carried out by  CUHK's Department of Architecture to explore ways of designing new frontiers in the architectural design of future schools and classrooms.

The aim of the competition is to make use of students' creativity and innovation or more precisely, the application of both to design future schools and classrooms. The opinions of students and teachers, the ultimate users of schools, our education facilities, have been neglected in building schools.  I hope that this event will send a message to every student in Hong Kong that they all have a stake in how schools should be built in the future,'' said Assistant Secretary for Education and Manpower and the Quality Education Fund secretariat Anthony Poon Hon-hung,  during the prize-giving ceremony.

The project was launched started by the university last September. with a Design Charrette and School Surveys.

Fifth form science  student Liu Chun-kei, a  team leader at  SKH Li Ping Secondary School, said: It took us a month to complete our  model.

'We believe a future school should not only serve educational needs, but should also be an indoor game centre, exhibition area and self-learning centre. Education in the 21st century should go beyond transcend the classrooms,'' he said.
