A maid who claims her employer scalded her with an iron and beat her with a toilet brush told a doctor her injuries were caused when she burned herself and fell, a court heard yesterday.

Dr Wong Cheong, testifying for defendant Katrina Leung Wai-kuen, 33, said he examined Indonesian Sutinah Samian, 22, on October 13 last year at his Kwai Chung clinic.

Dr Wong said he asked Ms Samian if she had been beaten or been tripped over after seeing she had suffered serious bruises. He said the patient smiled slightly and denied that was the case.

The maid, who appeared to be calm, later told him she had scalded herself and fallen a few days earlier, Dr Wong said.

He told Tsuen Wan Court it seemed strange that Ms Samian, who was accompanied by Leung during the examination, answered with a smile, given the nature of her injuries.

The court heard that Dr Wong suspected Ms Samian had suffered an internal haemorrhage and suggested she be transferred to Yan Chai Hospital.
