Zhong Biao, one of China's new generation of avant-garde artists, is giving us a glimpse of his 'staged' world in his latest solo exhibition, A Chance Existence. Juxtaposing a background that resembles black and white photography with characters dressed in sharp, contrasting colours (right), Zhong aims to comment on the fleeting nature of our existence. 'I paint people in black and white because people are temporary - they will eventually leave the world,' he says.

Carrying on the photography theme, The German Contribution 1948-1963 is an extensive show of 165 photographs from an influential trend called 'subjective photography'. The term, coined by German photographer Otto Steinert who was active during World War II, is used to describe photographs that break away from the convention of objective reproduction.
