Anita Lam

Nicholas Tse Ting-fung has been keeping local paparazzi busy lately, not least because of his romance with diva Faye Wong. He held his first concert at  Hong Kong Stadium last year and became the youngest-ever Best Leading Actor nominee at the Golden Horse Awards for his role in 1999's Metade Fumaca.

Where are you most likely to be at 10am on a Sunday?

On my way to work ... or in bed, asleep.

Where are you most likely to be at 10pm on a Friday?

On a live television show; this kind of programme always seems to be scheduled on a Friday night.

Where do you go to escape in Hong Kong? I park my car near the sea - at Repulse Bay or Shek O - and sit listening to the engine. I can stay there for hours.

Where do you live? Central.

Whom in Hong Kong do you admire most? Bruce Lee, for his martial arts, for being a legend ... for everything. I am also impressed by his philosophy, 'the natural unnaturalist and the unnatural naturalist'. I don't really understand it, yet it's so true.

What inspires you? Everything. Some months ago a plant caught my attention when I walked past a florist's shop in Causeway Bay. It turned out to be a perennial plant called the Jade Butterfly, which looks like a butterfly from above and can live for 100 years. I named my next album after it.

What is your most haunting experience? When I can't find a toilet and I have a stomach ache. I was in that plight in Kowloon Tong the other day and I hurried into a motel to ask a receptionist for a toilet key; I waited 15 minutes for her to finish her phone call, then she said the door was open.

What is the most beautiful spot in Hong Kong? The shreds of lights on shore when you are in the middle of the sea. Also the little pond near Tai Tam dam where I left my turtles.

What is the ugliest? When I first came back from Canada I thought the street markets were foul, but now I think even they are beautiful.

What has been your most unforgettable moment? The first time I was booed on stage; the first time I bought a car ... There was also the time my maid threw away the debris of the second guitar I smashed on the stage; it was like losing a wife!

What is your favourite movie? The Devil's Advocate (1997), directed by Taylor Hackford. I like it because it's so real: Satan, demons and temptations are all around and not just myths in the Bible. The actors [Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves] are great, and the directing is good.

What is the most overrated thing about Hong Kong's music industry? The Top 10 pop chart. It is all a matter of distribution. Radio stations boycott or play songs for every

reason except the quality of the music.

What is the best thing? That there is still room for genuine musicians to survive and that there is still an audience looking for something different; local hip-hop band LMF proved that when they sold more than 70,000 albums.

What makes you sweat? Flying cockroaches, the thought of people scratching my car or my guitar, or my tortoise dying.

What are you most proud of? The changes in my music, from being booed four years ago to playing at the Hong Kong Stadium. I am even more proud of the number of friends I have made; I was told I had broken the stadium's record for the number of flower baskets received.

What are your plans for the future? I want to build a graveyard for my guitars and open it as an exhibition. The tombstones would show the date of their purchase, their lifetime achievements and the date of the concert at which they were smashed.

Give us some wisdom ... My dad gave me some when I told him I planned to go into showbiz: 'Play it by ear, kid.'
