Transmeta, founded in 1995 and listed on Nasdaq, unveiled models from Sony and Hitachi at last year's Comdex expo, finalising five years of research and development.

Last week, the company announced a win with Sharp Electronics, wrapping up its customer list of major Japanese firms. The list includes Casio, Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC, Sony and Toshiba and IBM.

'Crusoe-based systems have gained great acceptance and penetration into the Japanese and Asia-Pacific markets in less than a year, and many of these units are also shipping in the United States and Europe,' Jim Chapman, Transmeta's executive vice-president of sales, said.

Sharp unveiled the Mebius PC-SX1-H1 notebook in Japan, with up to 10 hours of battery usage and a 600 megahertz Crusoe TM5600 processor. It ships on June 30.

Crusoe chips, compared with their equivalents from rival Intel, run at about the same pace but use less power due to software design.
