When is it time to evaluate who your friends are?

Probably when you're Peter Chung, formerly of the Carlyle Group in South Korea.

The official company line after Mr Chung's e-mail of May 15 'Living Like a King', circumnavigated the globe was: 'Peter Chung no longer works for the company and did not work for the Carlyle Group in Hong Kong. He was recruited in Korea.'.

Read it and weep. Mr Chung's friends did before they hit the forward button.

'So I've been in Korea for about a week and a half now and what can I say, LIFE IS GOOD.

'I've got a spanking brand new 2,000-square foot, three-bedroom apartment with a 200-sq ft terrace running the entire length of my apartment with a view overlooking Korea's main river and nightlife.

'Why do I need three bedrooms?

'Good question. The main bedroom is for my queen-size bed, where Chung is going to [sleep with] every hot chick in Korea over the next 2 years (5 down, 1,000,000,000 left to go), the second bedroom is for my harem of chickies, and the third bedroom is for all of you when you come out to visit my ass in Korea.'

He went on: 'I go out to Korea's finest clubs, bars and lounges pretty much every other night on the weekdays and every day on the weekends too (I think in about 2 months, after I learn a little bit of the buy-side business I'll probably go out every night on the weekdays).'

There's more. 'I know I was a stud in (New York City) but I pretty much get about, on average, 5-8 phone numbers a night and at least 3 hot chicks that say that they want to go home with me every night I go out.

'I love the buyside.

'I have bankers calling me every day with opportunities and they pretty much cater to my every whim - you know, golfing events, lavish dinners, a night out clubbing.

'The guys I work with are also all chill - I live in the same apartment building as my VP and he drives me around in his Porsche to work and when we go out.

'What can I say . . . life is good . . . CHUNG is KING of his domain here in Seoul.

'Oh, by the way, someone's gotta start Fedexing me boxes of [condoms], I brought out about forty but I think I'll run out of them by Saturday.

'Laters, Chung.'

Onliners on line: Customers of Pacific Century CyberWorks' Internet service Netvigator are being offered the opportunity to harangue a customer service representative for HK$20.

Netvigator is planning to have a small band of cannon fodder manning the frontline at the International Computer Expo - Computer 2001, to be held May 26-27.

Customers who are either deliriously happy with their internet service provider or who just want a moving target to throw their modem at are being invited to attend.

The $20 is for admission.

'[The] time has come for us to get to know each other better to make our passionate relationship hotter than ever,' according to a circular from the company.

'In anticipation of our date, we would like to hear some of your preliminary comments.'

According to one user, the only thing that matters is speed and convenience, emotions don't come into it.

'I bet most people don't care about design that much and they certainly don't think of themselves and their ISP in terms of friend/lover whatever.

'If you must use such a metaphor, then it's like being married to someone you're not that happy with simply because there aren't any better options around,' she said.
