Why you can trust SCMP

Like any other metropolis, Hong Kong has its own brand of wackiness. Long queues for Hello Kitty toys at fast-food restaurants and mob scenes at sales centres for new flats demonstrate that. Although most of these stories make for funny reads in the newspaper, a group of artists has decided to go one step further - doing a show that pays homage to the 'eccentricity' of Hong Kong. A Tribute To Local Loonies is presented by Beat the Tiger Tonight Production, a loose alliance of cartoonists, columnists and designers. The exhibition features cartoons, photographs and graphic works that are more social commentary than artistic statement. Can Hong Kong people poke fun at themselves? You decide after taking a look at a piece called Byebye Kitty (left), in which the famous Japanese cat, Hello Kitty, gets whacked with a meat cleaver.

If seeing the priceless Cubist paintings at the Hong Kong Museum of Art has whet your appetite for French art, you can build your own collection at two art fairs that are happening right now. At The French Art Fair, an associated programme of Le French May, you can buy art directly from over 60 contemporary artists at studio prices.

However, if masterpieces are more your taste, check out Le Petit Louvre's 2001 Grand Exhibition, where authorised reproductions of works by Van Gogh, Renoir, Cezanne and Gauguin by skilful artists from the Louvre and the Orsay Museum are on display.

The French Art Fair, May 25. IFC, Connaught Road, Central. Tel: 2824 5727.

Le Petit Louvre, until May 31. Landmark Atrium, Central. 9am to 8pm daily. Tel: 2543 3313.
