I refer to the article by Martin Lee headlined 'Just a look, Mr Jiang' (South China Morning Post, May 15).
Mr Lee said that President Jiang Zemin should have acknowledged the Falun Gong protesters when he attended the Fortune Global Forum.
Even if he had done that, it could only have been interpreted as a slick public-relations move, for it would not have squared with the actions of Mr Jiang's Government. It would hardly cover up the continual persecution of Falun Gong by China's authorities and the denial of entry into Hong Kong of like-minded individuals.
Mr Jiang and the communist authorities have shown themselves to be fundamentally authoritarian and undemocratic. Freedoms of speech, religion, press and assembly are anathema to them.
I hope Martin Lee and the people of Hong Kong continue to demand real respect for 'one country, two systems' and that they continue to be vigilant in protecting their rights and freedoms.
