Burglars raided the luxury Peak home of former banker and executive councillor Li Fook-wo and made off with valuables worth about $180,000 yesterday.
Police said a $150,000 jade horse, gold ornaments and birthday and anniversary gifts were among the stolen items, while collections that included calligraphy and other jade objects were left, along with $10,000 in cash kept in a briefcase.
The fifth-floor flat in Guildford Road was one of two homes burgled in the area yesterday.
Mr Li, 85, a non-executive director of the Bank of East Asia, and his wife are in the United States for a wedding. The couple left Hong Kong on Monday.
Mr Li's two maids were asleep during the burglary. Police said the burglar or burglars climbed down drainpipes and prised open a dining-room window.
One of the maids, 41, woke to find that the unit, including three bedrooms and a study, had been ransacked. Initial checks showed that the jade horse and a $10,000 gold back-scratcher had been stolen from the living room.
