Modern Languages and Inter-cultural Studies year one student Leon Chu Chun-wai, 19, said his thinking and views were sharpened on the course.
Mr Chu, a music fan, planned to study music when he was in Form Seven.
Although unable to get a place at the music department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, his grade A in Chinese Language and Culture secured him a place on the new programme.
'I really didn't know what I would be studying. I knew little about linguistics and nothing about cultural studies. It is a new discipline in Hong Kong,' Mr Chu said.
However, the wide-ranging programme surprised him with the courses on offer.
'Cultural studies is a combination of philosophy, psychology, sociology and the actual world we live in. Our texts include movies, books and music. It's so rich,' he said.
