An organisation aimed at promoting better management of knowledge within local companies was launched yesterday. The Hong Kong Knowledge Management Society (HKKMS) plans to help companies find ways to better utilise staff knowledge. The organisation believes knowledge management has become more important as the service sector increasingly dominates Hong Kong's economy. 'The service sector already makes up a higher proportion of Hong Kong's GDP [gross domestic product] than any other economy in Asia and a significant segment of its population are knowledge workers employed in information-intensive businesses,' said HKKMS president Waltraut Ritter. 'Knowledge management adds to this by strengthening companies' ability to innovate, respond and compete through sharing and leveraging people's knowledge and expertise.'
