Proposed increases in parking meter charges will be restricted to just four busy districts under a new government plan aimed at winning Legco support.

Instead of a territory-wide increase, only charges at meters in Yau Tsim Mong, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Yuen Long would be raised from $2 every 15 minutes to $3, Secretary for the Treasury Denise Yue Chung-yee said.

Former financial secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen first proposed the rises in all 18 districts in his March budget.

The budgetary measures will be put to a vote on Wednesday.

In a letter lobbying for members' support, Ms Yue said the increase would first apply to the four busy districts where there were limited parking spaces.

Increases in the other 14 districts would be deferred for later review, after the usage rate for meters in the first half of the year was assessed.
