The Blues Brothers, it seems, aren't the only ones 'on a mission'. Spreading the good word about jazz throughout the community is the Hong Kong Jazz Association, completing its biannual gig package on Sunday (June 17) with a 'happening' at Club 64, Central.
The five-hour spectacular kicks off at 6.30pm and stars visiting Australian saxophonist Dale Barlow, bassist Sylvain Gagnon, Jason Cheng on piano, Darryl Chen, Johnny Abraham, Peter Scherr . . . and the list goes on.
Founded early last year, the Jazz Association didn't take its official bow until it hit the Jazz Club in October, when it staged its first concert. 'It was great fun,' says Gagnon, soon to be a veteran of both campaigns. 'Many people came and played, non-stop, one after the other, and it was great for all the musicians to get together for an event like that. And it was even better for the public.'
Flavour of the musical month in Hong Kong seems to be the sort of inhibition-loosening African drumming to which you can leap about without fear of feeling foolish.
As the percussive beats of the Djembe Massive continue to echo around town, a drum troupe from Senegal arrives. The Pangols (right), playing tomorrow (June 16) at Brown, promise a show combining djembe drumming, African dance and traditional song.
