Fifty-five workers at a Hong Kong tailor's shop were busy stitching around the clock last night after heavyweight opera star Luciano Pavarotti placed a jumbo order for nine suits. The Italian superstar, who performs in Hong Kong tonight, called in on the shop in Tsim Sha Tsui shortly after arriving on Monday and placed the $100,000 order. He ordered two bomber jackets as well as the suits. 'He was very decent and unassuming. He spoke in a low voice and said he wanted the suits to be made quickly,' said Manu Melwani, owner of Sam's Tailor. Mr Melwani said 55 full-time and part-time employees had been working against the clock since Monday afternoon to meet the deadline. The tailor's shop will deliver the black-and-blue suits to Pavarotti at his hotel by 1pm today, Mr Melwani said. 'An extra half a metre of fabric is used for each suit compared with a Chinese client,' Mr Melwani said. And Pavarotti's measurements? 'It's confidential. We keep it secret like a doctor keeping a patient's records.' Pavarotti will perform at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai tonight with American soprano Cynthia Lawrence and Hungarian conductor Janos Acs. Organisers of the concert say it could be 66-year-old Pavarotti's final performance in Hong Kong. He last performed here 11 years ago. On Saturday night he sang in Beijing as one of the Three Tenors - along with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras - in the Forbidden City before 100,000 people. He described Beijing as an 'incredible city' and said staging the Olympic Games there in 2008 would raise its global profile. On arrival in Hong Kong he revealed that he had sung a duet with Jiang Zemin after the President dropped in for lunch on Sunday. Pavarotti described it as a 'romantic' moment.
