Actor Chow Yun-fat will be awarded an honorary degree by City University, which regards him as a role model for young people.

The university's council said yesterday that an honorary doctorate of letters would be conferred on the star at a ceremony in November.

'Mr Chow is a celebrated actor and is known for his modesty and eagerness in learning,' the council said. 'He is looked upon by society as a role model.'

The university said his parts in Anna and the King and the Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had won over Western audiences.

Chow, who grew up in a fishing village on Lamma Island, made his film debut in 1976 and shot to fame in Hong Kong with the release of The Story of Woo Viet.
