Outstanding sixth former Kelvin Mak Ka-ming will join nine other local students to take part in the Global Young Leaders Conference in the United States.

The HKMLC Queen Maud Secondary School student was nominated by his school to attend the conference later this month with 350 high-flyers from around the world.

The 12-day event will include trips to New York, Washington and the White House, and forums on political topics such as interdependency; international law and human rights; global finance; and the role of the United Nations.

At the conference, each participant will have to give a speech on designated topics.

Ka-ming said if given a choice, he would like to talk about changes after the handover. He said many foreigners seemed perplexed about Hong Kong's situation after 1997.

'I want to clarify their understanding of Hong Kong. Through ICQ, some have asked if we are controlled by the Communist Party!' Ka-ming said.

Acknowledging that there was a long way to go before Hong Kong could build a political system that was as democratic as the American one, Ka-ming said the SAR could not rush to achieve that goal.
