A gadget allowing users to communicate in different languages has been voted Hong Kong's best invention.
The International Language Translator was joined by a multi-purpose rubbish bin, a cyber-safety lock and an electronic school bag as the top inventions in a competition organised by the Intellectual Property Department.
More than 600 entries were received and 2,759 votes cast by the public.
The voice-based language translator received 728 votes. Designer Chu Ka-wai, an engineer, said it was unlike electronic dictionaries, but added: 'The department suggested I not disclose details about my invention before I get a manufacturer.'
The multi-purpose bin, which categorises rubbish, was voted the best for the environment.
The cyber-safety lock, which does not require a key, was ranked the best household invention, while the school bag, which has Internet capability, was voted the most suitable for children.
