An elderly woman who claims a dim sum server poured hot water down her back is seeking $300,000 compensation for burns.

Lui Yin, 70, claims she was a regular for yum cha at Lucky Restaurant, Tuen Mun. She told the District Court yesterday that on June 19, 1998, she arrived so early that few customers were in the restaurant. Ms Lui said she greeted dim sum server Chan Lin-mui but received no reply.

'All of a sudden, she [Ms Chan] poured a pot of hot water on me,' Ms Lui said. 'Afterwards she swore at me and I was in too much pain to say anything back.'

Ms Lui said she neither called police nor went to hospital after the alleged incident.

Solicitor Henry Lok, for Ms Lui, said his client had suffered second-degree burns to her back. A doctor who examined her is due to give evidence today.

Ms Chan, defending herself, denied deliberately pouring water on Ms Lui. 'I don't even know her. Why should I pour hot water on her?' she said.
