WILLIAM Wong Wai-lap crushed fellow-Olympian and defending champion Chan Kin-ngai in straight sets to recapture the national men's singles title at Hongkong's Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Wan Chai last night.
The 1991 Hongkong champion was in devastating form as he needed less than 20 minutes to demolish a hapless Chan 15-2, 15-0 in the most lopsided final ever seen in the annual tournament.
National coach Chan Chi-choi, however, defended Chan and said: ''The Hongkong squad had cut down on their training since coming back from the World Championships and the East Asian Games and Chan Kin-ngai is taking his time to get back to form.
''He knew he was way from his best and in fact he even withdrew from our team for the coming Malaysian and Indonesian opens because of his poor form.'' Also pulling out from the Southeast Asian trip is the territory's number one women's singles player, Wong Chun-fan, who stamped her supremacy with an easy 11-5, 11-1 triumph over Chan Oi-ni for her second straight national crown.
Wong, Hongkong's sole female player at the Barcelona Olympic Games, collected a second trophy when she and Chung Hoi-yuk defeated Ngan Fai and Tung Chau-man 15-11, 15-2 in the women's doubles final.
Chung was also a double winner, partnering Chow Kin-man to the mixed title with a 15-6, 18-16 victory over Tse Bun and Chan Oi-ni.
