Former chief secretary for administration Anson Chan Fang On-sang is likely to join her alma mater, the University of Hong Kong, to teach political science.
Speculation about Mrs Chan's appointment has been rife, with suggestions she would join the university's Department of Politics and Public Administration. She retired from the top civil service post in April, saying she wanted to spend more time with her family.
A university source told the South China Morning Post yesterday that negotiations had already begun. 'It is true, but the appointment is still being handled higher up [by the university] at this moment,' the source said.
'The university has always been in contact with her, and . . . our people had talks with her. What happens now is the result of on-going negotiations.'
In March, Mrs Chan was among 300 guests at a garden party at the campus to mark the university's 90th anniversary. Mrs Chan graduated from the university with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1962, and received an honorary doctorate of law in 1996.
The source said the final details of the appointment were still being worked out between Mrs Chan and the university's management. Whether Mrs Chan would be employed as a guest lecturer or a permanent professor would be announced soon.
