Hong Kong escaped virtually unscathed as Typhoon Yutu brought only limited rainfall and lighter-than-expected winds yesterday.
Yutu crawled at just 16km/h towards the Guangdong coast to the southwest of Hong Kong, packing winds up to 62km/h.
An Observatory spokesman said Yutu had lingered 200km south-southwest of Hong Kong.
It dumped only limited rainfall on the SAR, much of it in Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan and Sai Kung, where up to 60mm was recorded.
By 9pm, 28 flights had been cancelled at Chek Lap Kok airport and 145 flights had been delayed.
Terminal operations general manager Eric Wong Wai-lun said the typhoon was 'very minor'. He said the airport had learned from past experiences, including Typhoon Utor, which left tens of thousands of passengers stranded a fortnight ago.
Airport Authority chief executive officer David Pang said he had anticipated a long day and night for airport staff but that they had been well prepared even if conditions worsened.
