Delegates from different countries to voice opinions and discuss global issues at summit
Undergraduates of different nationalities and cultures are to meet at the International Youth Summit 2001 in Hong Kong this summer.
Focusing on the issue of 'sustainable development', the summit is the first of its kind in Hong Kong organised by students at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).
Over 160 university students from 31 countries and regions around the world will participate in the five-day programmes. They will identify and share their views on problems faced by the world today.
'Every continent will have its delegates,' Professor J. A. Spinks, pro-vice chancellor of HKU, said at a press briefing.
Professor Spinks hopes the discussions among students from different cultural backgrounds will be useful not only to Hong Kong, but to the whole world.
'Besides providing lessons to young people, the campus environment should lead them to pursue ideals and dreams,' Professor Spinks said.
'In addition to expert knowledge, young people have to develop other skills, like organisation ability, negotiation skills and communication skills.'
