Shamefully neglected

ELDERLY suicides will increase if there is no increase of the old age allowance.

This is a deplorable state of affairs.

Many of these old people have devoted their working lives to Hongkong and significantly contributed to its prosperity and stability.

That they receive such a meagre reward is something that I find appalling.

Many of them take their own lives rather than apply for Public Financial Assistance, as even though they are alone and poor, they do not want to live on charity.

Also, some of the old people are illiterate and find it difficult and confusing to apply for such assistance.

Statistics show that suicides are on the increase among old people.
