CHEUNG Chau islander Ma Fook-ming bid farewell yesterday to a half-century-old ''float'' he sat on when taking part in a bun festival procession 35 years ago.

A ''float'' is a saddle-like metal structure used to support a child carried shoulder-high to parade through the streets during the float procession.

The hand-made float was one of the oldest still used on Cheung Chau.

''It is part of my history. I was carried on it 35 years ago.

''You were carried above the heads of the crowds and it was really like floating in the air,'' Mr Ma said.

Mr Ma, who has taken part in three processions since he was five, said being able to take part was considered an honour because ''only beautiful children were chosen''.

He added that his 10-year-old daughter had also joined the parade for five years.
