Now that the KCR Corporation proposal to construct a rail line across the ecologically-sensitive Long Valley has to be abandoned following the Appeal Board decision (report, South China Morning Post, August 1), I note that one of the remaining options to be considered is a tunnel beneath the valley.

Should this proceed, the tunnel will almost certainly drain the ground above and around the tunnel and thus cause unacceptable environmental damage to the overlying wetlands.
An alternative route, avoiding Long Valley altogether, should clearly be the preferred option.
