The mother of a Hong Kong Falun Gong member detained in Beijing is to carry out a three-day walk around the territory to collect signatures and campaign for his release.

Lau Yuk-ling, 58, who is also a sect member, will be joined by about 20 Falun Gong practitioners on the walk, which begins today.

In a letter members will distribute along the way, Ms Lau urges the central Government to release her son and to stop its crackdown on the movement it has labelled an evil cult. They also plan to hold a group practice session in Chater Garden on Friday and submit a letter to the Beijing Liaison Office in Sheung Wan.

Chan Yuk-to, 34, a Hong Kong permanent resident, was arrested at his Beijing flat by public security officers last month.

Chan, a Beijing-born technician, moved to Hong Kong in 1991. He started to practise Falun Gong two years ago when he moved back to Beijing to work for a foreign company.

Beijing has not yet informed his family or the SAR Government of the arrest and it is not known where he is being held or what charges he faces.
