SCHOOL children who go to holiday camps usually put on weight. This was revealed by a spokesman for the Education Department, who attributes the gain in weight to ''healthy appetites'' developed from outdoor activities.

About 2,000 boys between the ages of 15 and 17 are taking part in 10 recreational camps organised by the Education and Social Welfare Departments in co-ordination with the Army. Each camp will comprise 200 boys and will run weekly in two centres at Sai Kung and the Far East Farm in Yuen Long.

The one-week programme includes swimming, hiking, initiative tests, sports competitions, barbecues, concerts and educational film shows. The Forestry Division of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department has also offered to provide trees for the teaching of raft construction to the boys at some camps.

THE first major breakthrough in computerising Hongkong's textile industry was taken by the South China Bleaching and Dyeing Factory Ltd, when it announced its acquisition of an IBM-360 model 20 computer.

The computer will be installed in the head office following an extensive education programme for key executives of the factory and will be used to control payroll, materials costing and distribution and many other functions.

The computer was ordered by the Managing Director, Mr T. K. Ann, who was one of several leading businessmen who attended an executive computer concepts course conducted by IBM in April. It was the seminar that prompted his decision to acquire more sophisticated and efficient equipment.
