Toastmasters' public-speaking demonstration the talk of the town

How men should 'manage' their wives was just one of the many interesting, if not controversial, topics at a recent Toastmasters public-speaking demonstration.

'I have overcome the fear of public speaking and have improved my presentation skills since I started to take part in Toastmasters,' said member Derek Wong Park-hung.

The insurance salesman is now confident enough to give speeches without a script to be more natural.

Toastmasters is a worldwide non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the communication and leadership skills of its members.

The first demonstration of public speaking by Toastmasters International Hong Kong Division was held at a mall in Causeway Bay last month.

The roadshow chairman Alex Cheung Siu-hang said the group will focus more on preparing young people for the workforce.

They will also focus on young people who are already working and might be interested in organising public speaking events at secondary schools.

The president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Toastmasters Club, Agnes Cheung Chi-wai, said the group has two meetings every month.

There are three basic components to help members develop communication skills including preparing speeches, impromptu speaking (table topics) and evaluation (constructive feedback).

The other activities are speech contests and workshops.
