An employer ordered her Indonesian maid to beat herself for performing her job poorly, a court heard yesterday.

Rusmini Gunung, 27, told the District Court that Leung Yee-kwan, also 27, often scolded her for not doing well even though she tried her best. She has testified that Leung's abuse left her with a ruptured liver and broken ribs.

Leung has pleaded not guilty to one charge of common assault, four of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, four of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and one of carrying out acts intended to pervert the course of justice.

Defence lawyer Toby Jenkyn-Jones said: 'This allegation of being told to beat yourself is complete nonsense. It is only a fabrication on the spot.'

Ms Gunung replied: 'I had to do it. Because if I did not, she would repeatedly abuse me . . . a normal person would never do this. However, I have really experienced it. It is true.

'When I was instructed by the employer to beat myself, I only beat myself softly. I only wanted to satisfy her order. I was not committing suicide.'
