Vikki Au, assistant education manager at the centre, said case studies done by management experts enabled students to relate their learning to real-world business situations. Ms Au said the Heriot-Watt MBA is a demanding, distance-learning degree that focuses on gaining knowledge of subjects fundamental to effective management. The emphasis is on relating theory to practice.

To earn the degree, students must complete nine courses - seven are compulsory and two are electives. Compulsory modules include accounting, economics, finance, marketing, organisational behaviour, quantitative methods and strategic planning.

Participants decide how many modules to take at any one time, but they must complete their MBA within seven years. A maximum two attempts are allowed for each course Online support is available for those who have not taken up studying lately to help them rediscover the desire to learn.

Applicants should hold a first or second class honours degree in any subject or pass two compulsory courses within the Heriot-Watt MBA Distance Learning programme. Each of the nine modules costs $6,850.
