The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (Ofta) has started cracking down on hundreds of indoor transmitters in an attempt to remove illegal radiation devices.

These transmitters, which are estimated to be inside flats at more than 300 different locations, could affect some mobile reception.

'We have shut down our hidden cell sites, complying with Ofta's requirement,' said a Sunday Communications official. 'Hopefully our full coverage will soon be recovered.

'We hoped that Ofta would use its authority to gain more access for coverage.'

An unnamed industry operator claimed the new Ofta policy created a dilemma because they could not get access to some areas before being forced to shut down their transmitters.

The operator suggested that areas such as Heng Fa Chuen, under the management of the MTR Corp, and Whampoa Gardens, developed and managed by Hutchison Whampoa, were prime examples of areas where it was difficult to get full access.
