Qualcomm's open-source wireless technology, Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (Brew), continues to gather momentum since its introduction eight months ago.
Its latest Brew win has materialised in China.
Unicom Horizon Mobile Communications, a subsidiary of China Unicom, has signed a contract with Qualcomm to use the Brew technology. The company intends to introduce wireless services running on the platform.
The relationship with mainland companies was seen as a boon for Qualcomm's stock, given the potential enormous size of the market.
Qualcomm has agreements with carriers Verizon Wireless in the United States, Korea Telecom Freetel, LG Telecoms in South Korea and Pegaso in Mexico to run wireless services and content on the Brew technology.
The deals are significant for Qualcomm, which is trying to dominate the growing wireless market by developing wireless platforms to run applications, content and services.
