Vice-Premier Li Lanqing has called for a massive crackdown on cultural pollution.
Xinhua reported Mr Li intends to tighten controls over different aspects of culture and social life, including publications, nightclubs and pirated VCDs.
In a televised address last week, Mr Li said he considered six areas to be plagued by cultural pollution. These included Internet cafes, electronic games centres, nightclubs, audio and video products and publishing and printing businesses.
He told cadres to clean up these industries and said the State Council regarded the task as a top priority for the rest of this year.
His address is expected to be followed by a spate of crackdowns aimed at industries considered 'problematic'.
Mr Li, who is to head a high-powered taskforce in charge of the crackdown, said the Government would continue to tighten controls on 'illegal publications concerning political issues' and 'pseudo-science', a term in many cases used to refer to books about the outlawed Falun Gong movement.
