FINAL JOURNEY: Driver Hon Man-fai mans the controls of the last of the first-generation MTR trains. About 6,000 enthusiasts said farewell yesterday and 1,000 of them enjoyed a charity ride, raising $150,000 for the Community Chest, before the train, in use since the network opened in 1979, returned to its Kowloon Bay depot. Phil Gaffney, MTR operations director, said the train would be modernised and returned to service in four weeks. The transformation will mark the end of a three-year, $1 billion programme.
