Amores Perros (Spanish) (III): Three cars collide on a rainy night and the consequences on the passengers make up the three intertwining stories. Emilio Echevarria, Gael Garcia Bernal and Goya Toledo star in this multiple award-winning film. With English and Chinese subtitles.
The Cabbie (Mandarin) (IIB): This film is chock-full of quirky but human characters in eccentric situations. Su (Qu Zhuhong) looks upon his vocation of taxi driver as more than just a job. If his customers seem offbeat, so too are his parents: Papa (Tai Bao) is the blithe owner of the taxi company, while Mama (Cheng Xiuying) is a forensic doctor. The history of their courtship is one chapter in the film, the cabbie's own romance another. A sparkling comedy. .5
Fulltime Killer (Cantonese) (IIB): Andy Lau is Tok, a brilliant but egotistical assassin out to prove he is better than the king of professional killers, the mysterious O (Sorimachi Takashi). They are linked by a beautiful cleaning woman, Qin (Kelly Lin), who works in a Japanese video store by day and spends her nights alternately tidying up O's flat and dating Tok. Innovative camera work and some brilliant action scenes help lift this effort from director Johnnie To above the norm - just. .5
Jurassic Park III (IIA): The dinosaurs now seem a bit tame, but Steven Spielberg and company have milked the remaining thrills to create an entertaining third film. Directed by Joe Johnston (Honey, I Shrunk The Kids), Jurassic Park III is a gentler scary movie. Paul Kirby (William H Macy) and ex-wife Amanda (Tea Leoni) hire palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant (Sam Neill returning after skipping the first sequel) and his colleague Billy (Alessandro Nivola) to go with them on a flyover of the dinosaur theme park island. The action plays like a prehistoric car chase. Ideal summer fare. .5
Kiss Of The Dragon (IIB): Jet Li takes on what seems like the entire Parisian police force in this non-stop action film co-written and produced by Luc Besson (creator of La Femme Nikita). The plot is cliched and convoluted, but Li is a sympathetic presence and the film is never boring. He plays Liu Jian, a supercop from Beijing, who comes to Paris to infiltrate a drug trafficking ring. His nemesis is Richard (Tcheky Karyo), a brutal, corrupt police inspector. .5
