THE Organised Crime and Triad Bureau is investigating an arson attack in which more than $8 million worth of luxury cars were destroyed. The 38 new left-hand-drive cars were at the Kwok Wai Motor Company yard in Ping Shan when the fire broke out at around 4 am yesterday, waking three night watchmen. According to Kwok Wai manager Leo Hon, the 38 cars, including a number of Lexuses, were valued at $8.6 million and were to be exported to China at the end of the month. He said the bodies of 50 cars, vehicle engines and various spare parts, kept in wooden containers at the site, were also damaged. It took firemen two hours to extinguish the blaze. Police suspect triad involvement and are investigating arson and extortion.
