The parents of autistic boy Yu Man-hon, who disappeared on the mainland as a result of administration blunders a year ago today, will appeal to Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa this morning to renew efforts to search for their son.

Yu Lai Wai-ling, the mother of Man-hon, criticised the SAR Government last night for failing to find her son, who is aged 16 but has a mental age of two.

Man-hon ran away from his mother on August 24 last year and slipped through the border at Lowu. Mainland officers returned him to the SAR side, but when an attempt to verify his identity failed, he was released in Shenzhen. Mrs Yu is asking Mr Tung to step up efforts to find the teenager by appointing a taskforce of private detectives to help in the hunt.

The couple's letter to Mr Tung says: 'Do you still remember? A year ago today, the Hong Kong Government handcuffed my son with a pair of handcuffs used for criminals and forced him to leave his birthplace - Hong Kong.

'The fate of the boy was changed on that day . . . The child has suffered for a year. His parents have also suffered the pain for a year.'

Mrs Yu said they had spent more than $700,000 travelling to five provinces to follow up reports of their son being spotted. She has also sent a petition to British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the UN, urging them to pass on their request for help to President Jiang Zemin, whom they had repeatedly failed to reach.
