Someone has been winding up China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII).

The MII has a disclaimer on its Web site denying it is involved in the 'China Telecom 2001 Conference' organised by an outfit called DGI.

The organiser - who we failed to track down - is claiming that officials from MII will attend and speak at the conference.

In its disclaimer, the ministry said it wanted to clarify two points:

'1: We have never heard of such conference and haven't committed to attend such a conference.

'2: If we want to organise any conference, we will officially send invitation letter to relevant parties and will also post event info on our Web site.'

Industry watchers said the disclaimer was a rare move by the MII and could reflect the fact that because China's telecommunications sector is so attractive, people will try and make money out of it.

Either that or DGI had nothing better to do on a wet Tuesday afternoon than organise a telecommunications conference.

Shipshape: 'Phoowaaarrr, check out the pallets on that baby.'

A well-known refrain uttered by Hong Kong's mid-stream cargo operators as they survey a container-laden vessel dropping anchor.

Let's face it, cargo is not a sexy topic.

Which is probably why Cathay Pacific Cargo's quarterly magazine Cargo Clan  has Freight Mate Miss Claire splashed all over the cover.

Yes, Lai See  has touched on this topic before but it is sometimes interesting to revisit old haunts.

Just like Big Wave Bay-based Freight Mate Claire, who is 'of English descent but spends much of her time in the Asia-Pacific region'.

Fortunately, Kenny Tang, Cathay's general manager for cargo, puts it all into perspective with his editorial: '[The Annual Cargo Agents Award Dinner] was held to acknowledge the crucial input . . .' flick, flick, flick . . . 'During breaks in her busy schedule, she likes to entertain friends at her beachside home where she is known to throw the occasional wild party.'

Letter-perfect: Hongkong Post are good, very good.

In fact, postal staff enjoy their job so much that they make extra work for themselves.

Moving home is always a somewhat traumatic affair with so much to remember.

Fortunately, for a small remuneration, Hongkong Post will redirect your mail from your old address to your new.

This means that you then do not have the hassle of writing to all and sundry to tell them you have moved.

A family moving to Pokfulam had their letters redirected from their old address in Happy Valley.

Hongkong Post fired off three letters to the family members at their new address informing them of the arrangement. A few days later, three identical letters arrived which had been sent to Happy Valley and dutifully redirected to Pokfulam.

Time out: Our movers then got on the customer hotline to Pacific Century CyberWorks to iron out a few glitches in their broadband Netvigator service.

However, a beep, beep, beep from the other end of the line suggested a discontinued number.

After a few more tries, our caller asked CyberWorks' directory enquiries to check the number, which they did.

'No answer, call back after 9am,' they said.

But it was 9.20am our caller pointed out.

'Hmmm, but there is nobody there,' remarked the incredibly observant CyberWorks operator.

Nose job: One for the diary.
