The embattled boss of a blacklisted removal firm has blamed the police after his company left dozens of irate customers and a legal minefield in its wake.
Janson Wong Hing-wah made the startling claim despite failing to pay debts while raking in clients' cheques.
Mr Wong, 47, who admits having a criminal record and who starred as a screen hardman in 1980s Hong Kong movies, finally broke his silence after the Sunday Morning Post listed a string of complaints against East Asia Movers made since last September.
Furious customers have repeatedly accused the police of failing to act. Last month the Post revealed that a nine-month police investigation was branded inadequate by government lawyers, who told police to start again.
Mr Wong's comments threaten to rub fresh salt into their wounds. 'When the police became involved, they took away my records. It meant I had no idea where the goods were and where they had to be shipped,' he said. 'Up until September last year everything was going OK, but when a customer complained it all started going wrong. This is not my fault.'
At least 16 customers have complained over the past year and in several cases have won legal victories and damages against East Asia Movers. But the small claims tribunal has been unable to enforce its judgments.
